Mustang, also known as the Kingdom of Lo, is a district in Nepal that was once an independent kingdom. Its history dates back to the 14th century when the Lo kings ruled the region, known for their wealth and power. The Lo kings controlled trade along the Kali Gandaki River and established a close relationship with Tibet. In the 18th century, the Lo kings faced conflict with the Gurkha army, which eventually conquered Mustang and added it to the Kingdom of Nepal. The kingdom of Mustang was a dependency of Nepal since 1795 but was abolished by the republican Government of Nepal on October 7, 2008. Access to the Upper Mustang area was restricted to those willing to pay a high price for a special permit.
